What is a funeral celebrant?

A funeral celebrant is an independent professional who creates and delivers bespoke funeral ceremonies. Unlike a religious minister, I'm not tied to any particular faith, script or format. I work with you to build a ceremony that reflects the person you're celebrating, whether that includes religious elements, secular content, or a mix of both. The ceremony is entirely shaped by what you want.

What's the difference between a celebrant and a vicar or minister?

A vicar or minister follows a religious service structure with set prayers, hymns and readings. I don't follow a set template. Every ceremony I write is built from scratch based on the stories and wishes of the family. You have complete freedom over what's included: music, readings, tributes, rituals, religious elements if you'd like them, or none at all.

Can we still include religious elements?

Absolutely. Being an independent celebrant means I can include anything you'd like. Prayers, hymns, blessings, a moment of silence, whatever feels right for your family and for the person you're celebrating. It's your ceremony.

What is a celebration of life?

Accepted Answer

A celebration of life is a ceremony held separately from (or instead of) a traditional funeral. Often it follows a direct cremation and takes place in a setting that felt meaningful to the person: a pub, a garden, a favourite restaurant, a community hall. It can be as formal or as relaxed as you want.

What is a living celebration of life?

A living celebration is held while the person is still alive. It gives them the chance to hear the stories, the love and the appreciation from the people who matter to them. These ceremonies are becoming more common and they're a real privilege to be part of.

How much does a funeral celebrant cost?

My fee for a funeral ceremony is £250. Celebrations of life and living celebrations start from £250. Interment of ashes starts from £75. Full details of what's included in each fee are on my Celebrations of Life page.

Are there any additional costs?

Accepted Answer

Travel within a 30-mile radius of Belvedere is included in my fee. Beyond that, I charge 55p per mile. I'll always let you know upfront if there's a travel charge. There are no hidden fees.

How far in advance should I book?

For funerals, families usually get in touch within the first few days. I'll always do my best to accommodate your timescale. For celebrations of life or living celebrations, you can get in touch as early as you'd like. The sooner we start, the more time we have to get everything just right.

Can I choose my own celebrant, or does the funeral director decide?

Accepted Answer

You absolutely can choose your own celebrant. Funeral directors sometimes suggest someone, but the choice is always yours. If you've found me and you'd like me to lead the ceremony, just let your funeral director know and I'll liaise with them directly.

Question 10

What happens on the day of the ceremony?

I'll arrive early to make sure everything is set up and running smoothly. I'll check in with you and your family beforehand. Then I'll deliver the ceremony we've built together, exactly as you've approved it. My job on the day is to take care of everything so you can be present with your family.

Question 11

Can family and friends speak or take part?

Accepted Answer

Of course. Some families want friends or relatives to read a poem, share a memory, or say a few words. I'll support anyone who wants to contribute, including helping them prepare if they're nervous. If someone writes a tribute but can't face reading it on the day, I'll read it for them.

Can we personalise the ceremony with music, photos or rituals?

That's exactly what I'm here for. You can choose any music you like. You can include photos, videos, candle-lighting, bubble-blowing, hand-holding, or anything else that feels right. I've had families put sweets on chairs because that's what their person always did. It's the little nods that make the ceremony feel like them.
